I (Warren) don't want to be morbid about a web log posting, but I'm posting my father's obituary just below. As I found last week, obituaries are expensive and/or newspaper staffs will change your words. So here's the final document, as worked on by me, Hazen, mom and Aunt Caroline. At first it was a horrible chore, but then it became both a challenge and a therapeutic diversion to condense my father's interesting life into sentences. Here goes; we're doing pretty well:

Rockport, Texas

John Clark Mitchell, “Mitch”, 70, died suddenly at his home in Rockport, Texas on April 8, 2011. Prior to moving to Rockport in 2003, John and his wife, Marthanne Warren Mitchell had been residents of Jupiter, Florida, Lexington, Kentucky, Toledo, Ohio, and Tequesta, Florida. John and Marthanne met in Leipheim, West Germany in 1967 and have been married nearly 40 years. John is survived by two sons, Warren Mitchell (Jenny) of Beaufort, North Carolina and Hazen Mitchell (Anni) of Worthington Springs, Florida; a brother, Corwin Mitchell (Anne) of New Bern, North Carolina; a much loved grandson, Lincoln Mitchell of Beaufort, North Carolina.

John was born on November 4, 1940 in Ft. Knox, Kentucky to Clark and Mary Anderson Mitchell. His parents and a brother, Carl Mitchell, preceded him in death. John was raised in central Kentucky and attended high school at Culver Military Academy in Indiana. He studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and held bachelor and master’s degrees in mechanical engineering from the University of Kentucky. He was proud to have served in the U.S. Army between 1965 and 1969. He volunteered for a tour in Viet Nam and was decorated for his service in combat. In his professional life, John worked as an engineer for Pratt & Whitney, Teledyne Technologies, and within the Kentucky Energy Cabinet, Commonwealth of Kentucky. He was passionate about his work, contributing to endeavors such as delivering NASA’s space shuttles into orbit and efficiently converting coal into energy. He was honored to be a Kentucky Colonel. Following retirement John and Marthanne traveled North America by RV, visiting family, friends and special places. Mitch was also an active volunteer for several activities close to his heart. He was highly involved with the Lexington Youth Soccer Association as a fan, parent, coach, referee and Board Member. In Florida, he did the announcing for soccer games at Jupiter High School and took on the hobby of “birding,” eventually serving as a Board Member for the Audubon Society of the Everglades. Very recently in Rockport he was instrumental in starting a nonprofit support group for the Community Aquatic Park and was a member of the Pool Operations Advisory committee.

No services are planned immediately. John’s ashes will be divided between his family plot in Mt. Sterling, KY and a favorite birding spot in Rockport. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made through donations to the Audubon Society of the Everglades, PO Box 16914, West Palm Beach, FL 33416-6914, or to the “Friends of the Pool”, PO Box 73, Rockport, Texas 78381.

We fished about 1.5 miles of the lower Red River, which drains to the Rio Grande. Catching wasn't red hot, but we caught fish. I missed the biggest brown trout strike of my life. When Big Brownie rose up on that Royal Simulator, she looked like a breaching summer sausage. Daniel the guide involuntarily cowboy whooped onshore - it was a hot strike. But not landed!

The sun has finally come out to play. We've been out in the fresh air as much as possible after a long period of snow, rain, snow, rain...but now it is blue skies. Our next door neighbors have a four year old named Flynn, and we visit them quite a bit. We are very thankful for their hospitality as Lincoln truly loves playing with Flynn. Lately, it is all about learning to play basketball along with throwing rocks. Or just random running! Take a peek:

The birds have been acting like Spring is here, so Lincoln wanted to make sure they had plenty of food and water...and have some fun, too!!

The Holidays and beyond...

Happy New Year!!! To be honest, we have been busy in a good way since before Thanksgiving. We spent a lovely Thanksgiving in St. Louis with the Vander Pluym's and tested out Lincoln's patience with cross-country driving. All went well, especially after we figured out the car DVD player and that we need to stop A LOT more!!

For Christmas we decided to stay in town. We got a great tree and covered it mostly with ornaments from my childhood that my mother made! We also had many additions from our years in marine science--think all types of fish. Lincoln really got into the idea of Christmas and the tree this year. He found some favorite ornaments and would routinely take them on and off the tree. Please forgive the long line of pictures below--I do think you will enjoy Lincoln's Xmas jammies, though!!

Lincoln is checking out the tree a few days in advance, sizing up his gifts, and making a few pre-emptive rips so he'll be ready Xmas morning.

Lincoln's big gift this year was a train table and wooden train set! Lincoln plays with this set every day in the morning, after school, and before bed. I think we hit one out of the park with this one! Thank you Craigslist.

He also got the traditional Xmas jammies from Aunt Becky and Uncle John Warren--they are soooo cute! He has been enjoying this loader from the Warrens and we enjoy it with the mute switch turned on.

There were many other gifts that Lincoln loves, we will post more of those pictures later. Recently, we had a beautiful snowfall that resulted in a snowday for mom and Lincoln! I think he likes the snow.

Other gifts this year included an entire winter weather set-up from Aunt DD and Uncle Gordon which this snowfall allowed us to try out! We played in the snow for over an hour, mostly eating and laying in it--his gear worked perfectly as he wasn't cold at all!!

Lincoln continued to wear his capilene set all day! This picture below is of special significance, not just to showcase his cute under layer. Lincoln is sitting on a toy chest made by my great Uncle Ed looking at a Paddington Bear made by my great Grandma Taylor. They would have loved this little boy, that is for certain.

To keep you all updated with his growth as of late--he has really taken off. Not too long ago his feet didn't touch the ground when sitting here! It is hard to believe how quickly they grow up. We hope you all are well in this New Year.

So I have failed at keeping the blog updated! I decided to post a load of pictures showing what we have been up to all Summer. Lincoln has been all about watering the tomatoes, particularly sans clothes.

Our buddies Brian and Jacqui have introduced a healthy baby boy to his new existence on Earth.

Our first weeks with Lincoln were all at once terrifying, magical and humbling [... see favorite picture ever]. Brian and Jacqui stood beside us then and did that most wonderful thing friends can do when life changes. They applied empathy, and communicated with us often. During winter 2008/2009, didn't we all know the economy and job markets weren't going to be roaring along in a year's time? Around our dinner table, we often discussed how the economic mess and the winter of 2009/2010 were not going to play nice together. It wasn't looking good as a recession, a caustic political climate, cold-season weather, and a shaky employment scene all lurked as life drained from the natural landscape in November and nature went down for a chilly nap. Perhaps you felt as absurd and helpless as I did... text messaging a donation to the Red Cross for Haitian earthquake relief, hearing of a friend's unfruitful job search, or watching favored small businesses close this winter.

Welcome Spring, we've been looking for you. This weekend we busted out for some low-tech, low-cost entertainment. Lincoln went camping and canoeing for the first time. It went great. Jenny and I put our feet up around a fire, caught up with friends Brian and Jacqui, roasted a marshmallow, and shook off the cobwebs. We found an inexpensive camera. The taxes are done. The dogwood planted last year has survived... you get the picture! Here's hoping you all are well.

APPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lincoln's new favorite word is apple, and he says it all the time. When he wakes up, walks around, chases the dog, eats dinner--apple is a favorite topic. He learned this one from Nana and Papa who came for a week! I wish we had pictures but our camera has been down lately. We are working on the replacement, promise!!!!!!!!!

He has also been enjoying some light reading. Sometimes the book is right side up and other times he prefers to really put his skills to the test so he flips the book over. Don't miss the Pulitzer prize winner: Peek a Who. Genius!!

Lincoln has also decided enough is enough with the unnecessary calories that beer drinking adds to your daily intake. He has moved on to tonic, which also has a more size appropriate bottle, which is nice.

A HUGE thank you to Doodle for not only helping out with Lincoln, but coming to North Carolina during what had to have been the coldest snap in a very long time. She even played outside with Lincoln everyday! Here they are just a-chattin' away as if it isn't 32 degrees out. That's right, 32 degrees.

Happy New Year to all. The holidays were aptly kid-centric, but thought I'd start 2010 with something different... like a picture of a building in New York City! Jenny will be looking in on the famous Flat Iron over this holiday weekend. She's there visiting a grade-school friend. Objectives are: Rest, Good Eatz, Fun, See the Flat Iron Building. So the boyz and Hula are running the ranch through Monday. Call or drop by?

And, we want to recognize Doodles grand contribution of labor and love during the first weeks of January. She visited The Crystal Coast while Warren was in San Diego for a training course. Thanks for the help; we love you Doodle.

Well, this year's holiday split the family up so that I went to St. Louis with Lincoln and Warren went to Texas to see his folks and bring his mother back for some help in January. Here are a smattering of pictures and videos from St. Louis--Lincoln was clearly well received!

11.08.09 - Lincoln's first birthday

We began our celebration last weekend by bringing a Kentucky corn pudding (Mary Mitchell's delicious recipe) to a massive wedding celebration for friends. Too good to pass up, Lincoln insisted on attending the party over a quaint cupcake ceremony at home.

Lincoln is walking, screaming and tearing objects and pets to the ground. He delights in joy when given things he wants, and loses his mind in fits of unhappiness when denied the same. We have the comeuppance that more than a few relatives have overtly demanded. Perhaps there is some hope in his default preference for the kitchen as "zone of chaos"? With Doodle's birthday gift spoon in hand as his battle mace, he does have tackling the trash can all worked out. Surely we can arrange 'taking out the trash' soon enough...

We received some great gifts for him from friends and family. Thank you for the thoughts... both of us were shocked to see this instinctual crayon-to-picture move on this fun place-mat from Salinda. Happy Birthday!

Credit to a lovely wife

Here, a few days shy of Lincoln's first birthday,

I am using this forum to give my sweet wife credit for being... well... herself. Last week she took on all the domestic duties while I slipped out of town for ~6 days to pursue wild game with a group of buddies. The task was, as you can see, dangerous and chock full of adventure:

Ya, that's a common snapping turtle! Jenny covered all baby, pet and house duty while I stalked pocosin swamps, hardwood groves and field edges inside two of eastern NC's national wildlife refuges. These places are designed to be refuge for waterfowl and black bear, not deer. My crew went there for the deer, and we were fortunate to be successful. Thank you Jenny, I love you. Thanks Lincoln, for charming mommy while I was gone!

Someone please tell Emmie I still have my bracelet on - it is good luck for sure. And Aunt Jen wants one!

Birthday, Panda Under the Sea, Milestones and more...

This past Wednesday Lincoln and I went to Trick-or-Treating Under the Sea (TOTUS) at the Pine Knoll Shores Aquarium with our friends Alex, Jeff and Quinn--it was awesome! Lincoln was so excited he fell asleep HARD just before we got there. Here he is showing off a panda costume his Nana made for his cousin Emmie many years ago and it fits Lincoln perfectly, even while sleeping! Thank you, Nana.

Did I say hard...I tried rousing him by getting him out of the stroller and he flopped on the floor. I think I saw a couple of speed dial calls to social services!

Aunt Marsha and the Chief

A side trip happened while Warren and Lincoln were in St. Louis. PawPaw (aka John Vander Pluym) was kind to join the Mitchell boys for a road trip to see Warren's godmother, Marsha Hulvey (aka Aunt Marsha), and her husband Bill (aka The Chief). The Hulveys now live in a country cottage near Calhoun, MO. Aunt Marsha has always been a special part of Warren's life. Bill takes nothing seriously. So we had to get ready for action. And the time was right for a visit. Bill's recently been nagged by relic injuries sustained while working as "enforcer" for an unnamed Biker Club in the 60's and 70's.

The trip was a quick one, but travel was hassle-free, weather was great, and hospitality and humor even better. Lincoln climbed his first full set of stairs; more than once. Warren helped Bill get a panhead Harley and its spare parts ready for sale. And PawPaw introduced Lincoln to his first herd of Missouri cattle at the farm next door. We made a heap of fresh, fun memories on our overnight stay.

Per nonsensical tradition, Bill was presented with an "Arrgh" T-shirt from the Beaufort Pyrate Invasion, which happens here in August every year. Putting on the rest of the pirate gear he had handy, Bill closed his "good eye" just in time to prevent the parrot, or Lincoln, from getting in there with a sharp object. Just in time:

Mommy had to go work on her big boat this week and next. So we boys are spending our free time with big land boats like tractors: the lawn tractor we borrow from our nice neighbors, Jack the big red truck tractor, and a special treat... we're getting ready for a plane tractor ride to St. Louis!

Kentucky Candy

My (Warren's) middle name is Anderson. This has a connection to the term "Kentucky Candy." [Click on the pictures for deelish closeups].

My naming is inspired by the lives of my paternal grandmother, Mary English Anderson Berg Mitchell, and her niece, Mary Anderson Mark. Both women's family bonds are strong in the area of Mt. Sterling, Kentucky. The elder Mary Anderson married Clark Hazen Mitchell in the 1930's. That's where my father comes from, but that's as far back in the family history as we need to go. If we make a lateral move onto the junior Mary Anderson's lineage, and turn towards the present, a limb of generations tracks parallel to the Mitchell family. And we descendants keep up with each other. The geographical distance between all the tree branches is vast now (e.g., Texas, North Carolina, Nebraska, Kentucky), and with so many female descendants the last names are jumbled ... but we're all "Andersons" if you take a hard look at it.

Lady Andersons have carried the techniques for making traditional Kentucky candy down through time. I don't know how many generations the craft goes back, at least 4... but tasting that first bite of cream candy at Thanksgiving-time every year was like ordering up a luxury good from a far more distant age. Growing up in the Mitchell home, it was referred to in one phrase: "Kentucky-Candy." The sudden appearance of hand-made bourbon balls, cream candy, caramels and almond roca at the holidays was treated reverently... as in, we kids were offered little of it until we were old enough to value exactly what goes into the effort. The major ingredients of cream candy are: cream & sugar. But I wouldn't dare call it simple - the process of making cream candy takes days and, if you can believe it, requires certain meteorological conditions.

So that parallel Anderson branch on the family tree? If you happened to attend the rehearsal dinner for our wedding, the candies on each table were from this Hodgenville-Mt. Sterling, KY team. We remain ever-grateful for the work that went into that gesture... the labor involved in "creaming" a recipe requires great patience and endurance, and it can't be rushed. Our buddy Paul just pedaled a bicycle from Newport, Oregon to Atlantic Beach, North Carolina. We first posted information about his trip and his cause in July.

The VanderMitchells all celebrated as Paul dipped his bike tires into the Atlantic Ocean some 5 weeks after a dipping out Pacific way. The full story of his 3,525 mile trip is told here. He looked hungry. We brought him a cold sweet tea as a welcome back present. There will be a big, official, media-covered reception and party at this spot on Thursday. Do come out if you're local. Looks like Paul is still a little short of his fund raising goal; I'm sure a humble donation gets you full access to the celebrity!

Pushing the skills

It is about now that Lincoln has been in the outside world for longer than he was a growing baby in Jenny's belly. He's almost 10 months old.

He currently wakes up in tears 3-4 times every night, and we're a little roughed-up trying to figure that out. More teeth coming in, perhaps. But it feels petty and self-centered to complain about challenges that come with the passage of time in baby-life. It is what it is. As a distraction from the bummer parts of parenting, though, he's become more fun than he ever was as a sessile eating machine!

He tickles if you poke his palms, laughs when dogs bark, laughs when he's held upside down, and laughs when his nose is mashed to someone else's. He visits Hula on her bed at least once an evening to squeal and pull on her lips, and he's become attached to a small, white-with-dots, tea towel-sized "blanket" that has a puppy's head in the middle...?! It seems like a personality is starting to come through. And perhaps walking is on the horizon if his inner determination continues to move furniture, see below:

So...it is just me and the Linkles this week as Warren is down in the Keys for work and some birthday (this Friday) fun. We are having a great time! I am even cooking for myself and the boy. I had a good friend, Amy come by and hang out with Lincoln and give me some good company for dinner. Here she is having an excellent time with kiddo.

Care to support OWLS?

Many of us have supported charity fundraisers for human causes, right? From recent times I can think of ambitious charity fund raising efforts by our friends Mark I., Suzy E., Drew W., and Thorpe's sister in St. Louis. But Paul's effort is different... in both scale of effort and beneficiary.

Paul Rudershausen, a colleague of Warren's, is biking across the United States by himself and raising money for the Outer Banks Wildlife Shelter (OWLS). Paul has volunteered for years at the shelter, which is just down the road from Morehead City. Warren got to know the OWLS crew through donations of fish incidentally caught during research projects (rehabilitating birds and mammals do enjoy a tasty menhaden now and again). One goal of Paul's ride is to fund the construction of a mammal cage to better treat larger animals like bobcats. The website to document his ride and collect donations is here.

Paul leaves this Saturday, August 1st, and will be on two wheels for a month. He's definitely up to the task: last summer he made a 'warm up' ride across Canada. So there is an air of confidence and excitement in the social and charity circles here. Word of his ride has made the local papers here and here. I wouldn't be surprised if Paul shows up on a national TV program during the event.

As Paul said on his blog, "What makes the Crystal Coast a special place to live and visit is the very same wildlife that OWLS treats as a result of us humans being here." Hope you give it a thought.

He's mobile and curious. Lincoln is dragging objects out into open spaces to bash them together. Wooden spoons on toys is a favorite, and here he's discovered a St. Louis Cardinals dish set from GG. His version of 'thank you GG!'

Minutes later, same Tuesday evening. Lincoln has crawled to the back door and invaded the dog's food and water bowls. Credit goes to Hula for kindly tolerating the incursion of her territory. She was in the room and watching... you won't see the cat get away with moves like this:

There's been peaks and valleys in our domestic lives lately: milestones for Lincoln, a botched vacation, a happy dash to Asheville to see the VP grandparents for Jenny's Birthday, a third round of ear infection in 2 months.

These could be good stories to tell old friends... but such stories need time and setting, and an affable sense of humor. And it wouldn't hurt if retellings were on a huge porch, in a rocking chair, with cool breezes blowing and a sweet tea in hand. That's the pace we're looking for... do stop by the house. JVP and LRM in action last weekend while WAM was out at Hatteras... bottle feeding on top of a Civil War-era fort?? No doubt. Fort Macon was a federal outpost for watching the sea, come Johnny Reb in occupation, come Billy Yank with siege guns to take it back. It's built into the earth, so has held up well over time:

Two days of offshore fishing (see below) were fair pre-payment for what new experience is quickly following my first Father's Day (Thank you for the card, VP's). I am a solo parent for the next week while Jenny is offshore on the NOAA vessel Nancy Foster. You can see her real time position here ("NF" on the map). Check back if interested, should they post a public cruise log I'll link that too. She'll be back July 1, so anyone local, do drop in.

I believe the boat has satellite internet that's fast enough - this is for you, sweetz. Lincoln is taken with the garments you left behind for his comfort. We love you.

Father's Day Food Chain

So happens that I just made my first overnight fun trip since Lincoln's birth. Credit to my hot wife for the long weekend pass. I joined an 8-man crew on the Stormy Petrel II for two phenomenal days of bachelor party fun off Hatteras. Honoring Brian Degan's leap into marriage next month was the cause - fresh fish for all involved was a big chunk of the motivation. Summer sets in

The mid-June news round up: The summer season has splashed down on us. Daytime temperatures are mid-80's and climbing. Sea temperatures have reached 80 also, and Morehead City has been filling weekly with beach visitors. We've done some dog sitting to payback friends for our Seattle trip. Here's Hula and her buddy Hazel rompin':
Lincoln first experienced Carolina cookin' at the annual Taylor pig pickin' on Saturday (known locally as 'Dessert Pork,' as the main course feeds the multitudes deep into the evening hours). More travel is to happen around Jenny's birthday when we head for the mountains. To put all this social activity in print, on top of work, keeping a home, mowing grass and raising a youngin'?... It sounds and feels busy. Perhaps it's the optimism of the season that has the activity level up. We do what we can in the nap department. Speaking Dog

We wonder if holding conversations with a dog is a developmental milestone. He's taken more interest in the dog than most animate objects. I imagine Lincoln tells Hula about his busy schedule at daycare, what he had for dinner, news of the day:

Uhhh... we'll call it good sign. And we've seen other small changes in his awareness recently. On Wednesday night Lincoln noticed the moon for the first time. We were strolling the backyard, unwinding before bed (~9:00). He looked down, and appeared to notice we'd projected dark, dark shadows, and had moonlight all around our feet. Then he looked up, and held his gaze on the moon for more than half a minute. He glanced back to the shadow, and back to the moon for another 10 seconds. Repeated in silence once more. I'm sure Hula heard more about his experience, we'll have to check with her.

Hope you all are enjoying a mellow and healthy start on summer. We know our friend Ellie had had a good week! She's gone back to her home after a major surgery. Go Ellie, your many far-away friends feel big love and excitement for you.

After travels

We're having our first 'sick baby' experience. Warren stayed home from work on Friday because Lincoln had a fever, started a cough over night, and showed signs of an ear infection. He's been to the doctor and has some stuff to treat his ailments. We combined his first weeks in daycare and a plane ride across the country in the same month... so it's likely this incident timing is on us. That doesn't feel good. Though others might say that we've been fortunate to go 6 1/2 months without a bout of illness? Whatever the case, we feel for him when he coughs his little baby cough.
He seems comfortable, tho'; he's been in as many good moods as usual. Recommended therapy includes extra cuddling, extra baths, keeping him calm and cool, and feeding a little more frequently - he's big on that last one. He confidently sits up on his own this week, too. We'll call that a feel-good milestone.

Doin' the parks and home

On our last full day in Seattle we met up with Jenny's college buddy Rebecca, her husband Carter and son Rowan.

We did a Saturday afternoon of parks and eatz. They get big credit for making the drive from Bellingham, WA to see us. Lincoln went on a swing for the first time at Green Lake Park:

We're in Seattle as a family. As I write, Jenny is in professional SCUBA training at the NOAA lab here in town. I have Lincoln for a week of daddy daycare duty. I dig that - a little more work than your traditional beach-and-umbrella-drink vacation, but I'll take it after a busy spring field season on Albemarle Sound. He did great during the flights out here. Not one major meltdown in three connections. Well... He did assault one nice woman with his 'pacifier'. I apologized. And blamed this shocking violent trait on his mother's people.

This morning The Critter and I went out for a coffee: not hard to find in this town. "How many shots are in your small latte?", says I, to the heavily-tattooed barista at the organic breakfast cafe. She shoots a glance back at me over the top of her librarian eye glasses. I expect, "You aren't from 'round here, right?" But what I get is, "Uhh, two shots... if you're not up for the double."

Ahh, Seattle. For JVP and I it has been since 2003; it's a great city. On our little stroller walk around the efficiency apartment this morning we saw these ethnic restaurant choices within a half-mile radius: Japanese (50 ft from the hotel), Mexican, Brazilian, Korean, Regionally specific Chinese, Irish, Mediterranean, Pakistani and something I'd never seen... Caspian? That might be one for this week. Savory lamb dishes were lousy on the menu.

Daycare and good health

This morning Lincoln made his first trip to a daycare facility. We decided to do that instead of lease a mercedes for the same price - he'd put mucho wear and tear on a leather interior. Instead, we'll test drive the care of strangers for a little while.

It was tough to drop him off - but his immediate fascination with babies his age was a warm reminder that we are a species that thrives through interaction with our own. Since birth, he's spent most of his time around dogs, cats and adults. So I'll choose to see the bright side of all this. A reposted favorite picture from the pre-daycare period:
We also went to the pediatrician for a 6 month check up yesterday: 19lb 1oz & 27.5" long. Health is good; only one shot, which went very well. He ripped his bandaid off within the hour.

The day has arrived! Lincoln has tried some rice cereal (aka brown rice pulverized in the coffee grinder mixed with water and breast milk)! Some people call this food. Lincoln doesn't care what it is called as long as it goes in his mouth. He took 6 bites! He seemed most interested in gumming the spoon, but also took in the cereal as well so I feel very successful. We will be trying out all kinds of things this weekend...

Lincoln has also been ramping up his playtime. He can put some serious grip on anything, especially a toy that makes a noise when he shakes it with all of his might (which is pretty strong these days). He has also been turning over from his stomach to his back!

During spring in North Carolina, migratory fish of economic and ecological importance arrive in our inland waters. These 'runs' of not-so-sexy species like American shad and blueback herring are like the famous salmon runs in the Pacific Northwest, and once had a much higher profile than they have now. For example, east coast fish migrations provided George Washington's Continental Army with meat provisions during the Revolutionary War. But between then and now, rivers were dammed, fishing efforts were mechanized, and coastal human populations exploded (to many effects). With few exceptions (e.g, striped bass), the size of migratory populations show a declining trend through the late 20th century.

Dark story, right? Not exactly. We're better informed along the east coast now than we used to be. Our water is cleaner than it was 30 years ago, waterfront development practices are improving, and in our country drastic resource management measures like fishing moratoriums have become options when populations appear very low. A good chunk of Warren's job is tied to migratory fish work, including a current herring research project. Below is a picture from this year's spring survey in Albemarle Sound, near Edenton, NC. Warren works with other scientists and a commercial fishing crew every week between late March and early May to monitor a population of blueback herring.
We're adapting to the challenges field work brings to parenthood - this month we're fortunate to host expert childcare providers Grampa and Doodle! More details and pictures to come on that - we had a fun and delicious Easter meal yesterday.

Jenny arrived home from the grocery store just in time to bust up Hula's squirrel sneak (watch as the slamming screen door spooks Mr. Squirrel and his mourning dove buddies). The dog had worked on this situation for about an hour... inching closer and closer as Mr. Squirrel fed on fallen sunflower seeds. We're betting she never catches one.

Weather is warming and North Carolina signs of spring are all around: Forsythia/yellow bells are blooming, spring peepers are singing, flocks of cedar waxwings are passing through, and fish such as herring, shad and striped bass are migrating in from the ocean. Perhaps we'll get out for another family game of Frisbee golf soon.

Last weekend we were lucky to have Aunt Dory and Uncle Gordon come to town. Aunt Dory could stay through Thursday, watching Lincoln while Warren headed to Burlington, NC for a meeting and Jenny put in 8-hr days at the office. And so we start to sincerely consider the "daycare era." We're fortunate to have enjoyed so much time at home with Lincoln, and to have relatives who give time so freely. It is doubtful we can avoid full-time daycare before this summer is up... that's a hard reality to get our heads around. But if daycare is the worst card life deals us, we'll take it. We're still working on creative solutions. A nation-wide recession doesn't help. Or does it?! Check out the good times 'round the living room.

Florida Weekend

This past weekend we went to visit Uncle Hazen and Aunt Anni in Florida. Their house is near Lake Butler in north central Florida, some 10+ hours from our place. That's 10+ hours using pre-parent math. So it was also a first test of our road trip abilities. Here's Jenny, Lincoln, Anni and her red-tailed hawk, Musket. Click the picture for a bigger version.

A long car ride with Lincoln went better than we'd hoped... still, aside from lunch at the Georgia Pig in Brunswick (BBQ = yum), the drive shall be filed away with memories such as taking down a Christmas tree or doing taxes. How many piggies in this picture?

It was a relaxed weekend, in warm climate, with good company. The adventure to mention has to be our walk in the woods with Musket. Anni is an apprenticed falconer, and we watched Musket work squirrels and rabbits on a horse ranch near their house. The Florida Mitchells:

We brought down goose breasts and fresh bay scallops from our region, and returned with fresh rabbit. We all made it into Gainesville for a Valentines Day 'pan-Asian' lunch feast at one of their favorite restaurants, shopped at an eclectic outdoor flea market, cooked and built fires in the evening, laughed a bunch and watched movies... perfect.

We do pride ourselves on the creative use of hand-me-down baby stuff. But finally, inspired [kindly harassed?!] by GG, we treated our boy to a new toy. We ordered a 'Rain Forest Jumparoo'. He took to it right away. You can see from his rolling technique how truly gifted he is. Tee hee.

Beaufort got a day of snow this week; it all melted within two days but scenes were pretty. First snow at the coast in 3 years. Fortunately, our new adult responsibilities at home meant that cameras were rolling when Francisco showed us his predator moves. This past weekend Lincoln (and Mommy) endured first-ever airplane travel. The goal was to be with family, and meet heaps of friends and relatives in St. Louis, Missouri. But we were particularly inspired by friends who faced big challenges soon after their daughter Ellie was born. In the later '90s we taught at the same outdoor education place as Gib and Abby, and we've vacationed with them a few times since. We've kept up with their life in recent years on the blog they keep.

So... we were proud and shocked this week to see Ellie on the front page of the Boston Globe! Then "The Fins" gave up 5 turnovers and blew up in the first round of the playoffs. In positive fashion, tho', Lincoln reports he is proud to have been on earth for the "record breaking 11-5 season." An optimist... wasn't around for last year's 1-15 record. We should have named him "Wildcat".

Our 'winter break' was a little on the slow side socially, but we were grateful for time in our home to focus on parenting. Some good friends popped in for visits, and we were surprised with tasty eatz-gifts: chicken and rice casserole, deliciously unhealthy linguine sauce, Christmas breads, even home-made Irish Cream. Here's our buddy Salinda visiting on January 2nd (and check the green blanket, made for Lincoln by Jacqui Jenkins):We still feel rookie at this whole feed, activity and nap schedule -- candidly, we had a few days just blow up recently. Walks at the wrong time? Diet choices for mom? Overtired? Growth spurt? It is frustrating not to know the root of an all-day fussy baby, but on we go. Sometimes on we go with cotton balls in our ears. Here's a shot of him in a calm, thoughtful pose (8 weeks old):
Warren goes back to the office tomorrow, so more challenges to come. Happy New Year everyone. Things like "global recessions" remind us of that one saying: "Change the things you can, and put fingers in your ears and say "La-la-la-la-la" at those things you can't control." I think that's how it goes.
